Beanstalk Global was delighted to host a dedicated broadcast with Fairmiles, a consortium representing fresh produce companies, NGOs, and academic partners, to explore its newly launched draft Just Transition Principles and the industry-wide consultation now open.
The broadcast was hosted by Max MacGillivray, Founder of Beanstalk Global, continuing Beanstalk Global’s commitment to convening informed, balanced conversations across agriculture, fresh produce, sustainability, and policy.
Originally formed to ensure a balanced, evidence-based debate around airfreighted fresh produce and climate policy, Fairmiles has evolved significantly. Now facilitated by COLEAD, the initiative has broadened its scope to address the wider sustainability transition facing global fresh produce supply chains.

Why this matters
As policymakers and buyers introduce sustainability measures , whether linked to net zero commitments, transport modes, or environmental and social standards, there is growing concern that poorly designed policies may lead to unintended consequences, particularly for vulnerable communities in the Global South.
The Just Transition Principles aim to help ensure that sustainability measures are:
- Fair, inclusive, and evidence-based
- Designed to avoid disproportionate impacts on producers, workers, and communities
- Supportive of environmental progress without undermining livelihoods or food security
