Their earlier career was spent working at a senior level for a European produce purchasing team, responsible for the strategic sourcing right the way through to the inbound supply chain for the UK’s multiple sites and everything in between. As an individual they were the “go-to” person for anything produce, both within the business and with their customer base.
More recently this individual identified the need for the agtech space to be able to “see into” their target sector and understand it from an insider’s perspective. This has led to two stints running commercial functions in this space, one with a large scale project development company and the other with a business selling a more targeted growing solution, significantly growing revenue in both companies.
It’s not just the experience in both fresh produce and agtech that makes this high calibre individual stand out. They “get” how important the relationship is within this sector and how that relationship differs in style from country to country. Their networking and relationship building (and keeping!) skills are second-to-none and they are widely respected throughout the supplier base for this. Their languages help, of course, with this person speaking fluent French and Spanish.
In terms of career move, they are open minded. Not through indecision but because their skillset could add value in a number of ways. It could be with a business in the mainstream sector looking at how agtech could help their business; or vice-versa. Equally a commercial or procurement role would fit this person’s talents very well.
